Illustration rare is a type of rarity in the Pokémon Trading Card Game outside of Asia, introduced in the Scarlet & Violet expansion. They are Full Art Secret cards that showcase Pokémon in their natural environments and offer a closer look at their unique personalities.
Illustration rare cards are usually holographic reprints of Common, Uncommon, and Rare cards from the same set, with alternate artwork. Sometimes, entire evolution lines get reprinted as illustration rare cards. These are often drawn by one illustrator, telling the story of that Pokémon growing up. If the final evolution stage is a Pokémon ex, that card is classified as a special illustration rare instead. Starting with the Scarlet & Violet expansion, illustration rare cards feature a single gold star () for their rarity symbol.
Art Rare cards (Japanese: アートレア Art Rare) introduced in the VSTAR Universe expansion can be seen as the cognate to this rarity in Asian language expansions, however this rarity does not provide a full overlap, as Art Rare cards from the Sword & Shield Series are officially designated as "Galarian Gallery holo rare" cards and can be identified with a white star or as their rarity symbol.[1] The Art Rare rarity denoted by AR () rarity symbol.
Illustration rare cards are similar to the Trainer Gallery cards introduced in the Brilliant Stars expansion (the Japanese VMAX Climax subset), bar the fact that they generally do not feature characters.
